Ariel: The World's Worst Roommate?

I always thought I was a terrible roommate. Even though I've remained close friends with two of my four roommates from college, I was convinced I was a terrible bunkmate. Maybe it was years of having my own room as a kid, or the fact that I tended to get not enough sleep (it's perfectly normal to function on 4 hours with a nap sometime throughout the day, right?), or maybe that I'm just not the tidest person? I've been hard at work editing my novel...and going nuts with it. I wrestle with editing as a process--for me, it's so much harder than writing a draft. I'll write a longer post on my editing struggles and what I've found works for me and what doesn't next week. 

This week, though, I'm up in Vermont visiting family (including my brand-new nephew!). And all this baby stuff has made me think about how much I want a kitty. (Because, y'know, my biological clock runs on cats). Also, I took a three-day sailing trip with my dad on Lake Champlain earlier this week. All this is to tell you why the following video is absolutely perfect for my frame of mind right now:

Brave

Regardless of how you feel about the Katy Perry 'Roar'  vs 'Brave' controversy I defy you not to love Sara Bareilles' 'Brave'. If there ever was a 'swagger song' it's 'Brave'. I'm a big fan of Sara Bareilles and 'Brave' is no exception.

I love the idea of being 'brave'. I love just how fiesty this song is. It's currently on repeat for my new WIP. I have a character who is reluctantly falling into the role of being 'brave' of taking on a fight for someone else. She's about to show 'just how big her brave is' in the next section I'm working on when she tries to plot how to save both her brother and a boy she hardly knows who, much like her brother, is bound by a very rash promise to a fate he can't escape.

 So, I'm going to go write in the corner and try not to tap my feet too loud.

Cupcake of the Week: BAMF GIRLS ARE BACK!

Your Wednesday just became BAMF awesome!

I forgot just how much I missed the BAMF Girls Club! I am so happy they are back for another series. For those of you that aren't familair with the BAMF Girls Club you are in for a treat. The BAMF Girls Club asks the question what would happen if you put Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, Lisbeth Salander, Michonne and Bella Swann all together in one house as roomates? It's the real world meets literary, pop culture, geeky awesome! The series is hilarious, super nerdy and good fun. I've loved the previous two series.

The first in this series (run by Comediva) features special guest star Veronica Mars. After Hermione's magical purse goes missing she turns to Lisbeth Salander for help tracking down the culprit. Lisbeth is a little indisposed with her brand new baking business (click here for that episode) so she hires the second best detective, Veronica Mars. Enjoy!

Cupcake...: Mental Floss... I Wish I had Some Right Now....

So, I have an unabashed love for trivia, and since Genn got me onto the Green brothers videos, the MentalFloss videos featuring the Green brothers is like chocolate covered crack.

But, it's been a few weeks since I'd watched one and I was catching up and I figured that if this was going to be indelibly burned into my brain, it should be in yours, too.

Mind you, I knew some of this already thanks to some conversations and questions flung between us three, but as he recommends in the video, don't look things up if you're squeamish, or if you're at work.

So, I do have two questions for anyone out there for the comments:

1) It doesn't have to be in relation to anything about the video, but do you have a piece of trivia that gives you the heebie jeebies you'd like to share?

2) I'm looking at a reading stretch in the near future and I'm looking for some recommends. I'll offer some of mine, but what would you recommend?

I'm in Utah this week, visiting my brand-new nephew. And I was going to publish something serious on the blog. But really, what I wanted to do was give you THIS. It is a slow loris. Getting tickled.

The slow loris is one of the only poisonous mammals in the world. It's deadly. And deadly cute. Observe:

Cupcake of the Week: Music and Unicorns

I'm afraid this week I haven't found a hilarious video to share with you all. I could share a spoiler-tastic Red Wedding YouTube video with you . . . not sure that would be the best cupcake I could give you though. I feel like you probably get a lot of Game of Thrones cupcakes from me.

Instead, I've got a unicorn sprinkles shaker and a song I cannot stop dancing too! All in all, not a bad haul.

1. Exhibit A- The Unicorn Sprinkles Shaker. For those times when you just need a unicorn's backside to give you sprinkles.

(Seriously I just . . . I can't stop laughing when I see this photo! It's hands down the instructional illustration at the side that gets me!)

Cupcake of the Week: Actual Cupcakes. GoT Cupcakes.

You might be surprised to learn this, but this is NOT a GoT blog. (Although we do talk so much about it that it might as well be sometimes). Still, since it's cupcake time--I decided to bring you an actual cupcake with frosting and everything because they're tasty and um, well...that would be something new and different.

Cupcake of the Week - Sweet Ways to Quit

Oh, we've all thought about it: some kind of glorious last goodbye to a job or a task we hate. I personally love the story of the flight attendant who, fed up, popped the emergency slide grabbed two beers and took the quick way out, waving the bird the whole way, but that's just one way to do it.

Some are sweeter than others.



I stumbled across this article and figured that while you or I may never actually go this route, it was certainly something we can all savor in that part of our collective hearts reserved for that spectacular send off.

Meanwhile, I'm going to have another look at the pile of crap in my basement that needs sorting ... my old story notes, random gifts bought but never sent, things I said I'd "fix" and never got around to.... gah, that's a project I'd like to quit! (My husband says I can't set fire to it. I've got to do it the old fashioned way.... but only because it would burn his stuff, too.... And the house. Stupid house.)

I am a massive Game of Thrones nerd. Now that Season 3 is on TV I'm pretty much going to be talking about nothing but Game of Thrones to my poor husband (sorry, love!). Cupcake of the Week: Pompeii (Get Your Nerd On!)

I saw this trailer the other day for an upcoming exhibit at The British Museum on life and death in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Needless to say, I jumped up and down a lot and am booking my tickets soon. I'm a huge nerd about Ancient Greece/Rome. I might have mentioned it before using made up words like nerditude! But in all seriousness, it's things like this that make me happy. The British Museum is one of my favourite museums in the world. I try to visit it once every few months. It's one of the many amazing things about living in London.

So, this is my cupcake for the week. A trailer for a museum exhibit (I know the idea of that just makes me happy) and a brand new exciting exhibit. It's a happy day for a nerd like me!
