Brave

My friend Sara Cook-Raymond runs a fantastic 'Swagger Song' series over on her blog The Long Ride Home. I can't tell you the amount of fabulous song recommendations I've gotten from her blog. Quick, go have a look, we'll be waiting!

Regardless of how you feel about the Katy Perry 'Roar'  vs 'Brave' controversy I defy you not to love Sara Bareilles' 'Brave'. If there ever was a 'swagger song' it's 'Brave'. I'm a big fan of Sara Bareilles and 'Brave' is no exception.

I love the idea of being 'brave'. I love just how fiesty this song is. It's currently on repeat for my new WIP. I have a character who is reluctantly falling into the role of being 'brave' of taking on a fight for someone else. She's about to show 'just how big her brave is' in the next section I'm working on when she tries to plot how to save both her brother and a boy she hardly knows who, much like her brother, is bound by a very rash promise to a fate he can't escape.

So, I'm going to go write in the corner and try not to tap my feet too loud.

Happy Wednesday! I hope this song brings a smile to your faces.

  1. I LOVE this song! I'm also pretty sure that if I had made a music video it would have been exactly like this one. It's hilarious and wonderful. My favorite line in the song is "nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do." It's not my favorite line because it's as inspiring as the rest of the song but that it rang so true. I swear I can still remember any mean thing that was ever said to me in my youth. Most are the kinds of things that wouldn't bother me now, but when you're trying to figure out who you are, words can be so damaging. On the flip side, Sara Bareilles tells us to be true to our words as a way of being true to ourselves because when we're true to ourselves, whoever that ever-evolving person is, that is very very brave. It's interesting listening to the lyrics as it made me think about how at times in our lives we're often trying to blend in and yet there's so much more to be said when we stand out. That encouragement to stand out--to be true--is a great one, and it's definitely the theme of this song and video. LOVE it!

  2. Right? I love this video and that song is just fantastic. I love the message of being true to yourself. I feel like we spend so much time trying to blend in that it's only when we let ourselves stand out a bit that we figure out who we are and who we want to be. And allowing yourself to stand out is pretty brave.
